2013 PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission

PBS 106.7FM, in association with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, is delighted to announce the second year of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission.

The Commission promotes innovation and excellence in jazz composition, and is open to Victorian Jazz composers under the age of 35. The Commission will award $10,000 for the creation and presentation of a new work to be broadcast on PBS and premiered at the 2013 Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF).

In 2012 the Commission was awarded to Tamara Murphy and her band Murphy’s Law, enabling her a unique opportunity to develop a small seed creative concept into a complete work that doubled as a live event and radio broadcast content.

"The PBS Commission enabled me to take my idea for a composition and develop it onto the stage. This has been an amazing experience for me as well as great exposure for my band, with publicity and support from PBS and the 2012 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Since then more momentum has been generated enabling Murphy's Law to record a new album for release later this year” said Murphy.

The Commission aims to support composers already actively engaging with audiences, and provides a platform to nurture the future of contemporary Jazz composition in Victoria. Both PBS and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival are delighted to be able to support the award which also receives the generous support of Mark Newman of K2 Asset Management.

Applications are open from Monday 24th September and close at 5pm Wednesday 31st October 2012.
