Today, the Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO) announced the appointment of Giordana Caputo as its new CEO.

Giordana moves into the role after more than five years as CMTO’s Training Manager and previous experience as station manager at Brisbane’s 4ZZZ.

According to CMTO Chairperson Dr Christina Spurgeon the CMTO is now well-established as the community media sector’s training specialists.

“We are entering a new stage of consolidation and growth and are excited to have Giordana take up the positon of CEO” Dr Spurgeon said.

“It’s a great credit to the out-going CEO Nicola Joseph, who established the organisation from scratch and now leaves it in excellent health.

Nicola also nurtured and grew the capacity of the CMTO team to the point that the internal applicant was also the best candidate for the CEO role after her departure.

Giordana brings to the CEO position a wealth of hands on experience in the community broadcasting sector.”

CBAA CEO Jon Bisset looks forward to continuing the close relationship between the two organisations through this transition:

“The CBAA looks forward to continuing a close working relationship with the CMTO with Giordana at the helm. Thanks also to Nicola Joseph, with whom the CBAA has worked closely during her tenure. We wish Nicola all the best with her PhD and continued involvement in community broadcasting.”

The CMTO has seen some changes in the last year with the passing of its first chairperson, Tiga Bayles and now the departure of Nicola Joseph who established the organisation and was the CMTO’s founding CEO. Nicola announced last year her intention to leave the position to take up a Phd research on diversity and the Australian media.

“We are extremely sad to see Nicola go but understand her decision and expect that she will continue to make nationally significant contributions to the sector through research and engagement,” said Dr Spurgeon.

Nicola will work Giordana during a short transition period.

Another long-term board member Andrew Baartz also recently completed his second term on the CMTO board.

“It is the sign of a strong organisation that these changes have been managed with smooth transitions and lot of careful planning” Dr Spurgeon said.

“Nicola Joseph laid the foundations of the organisation and we are immensely grateful for her contribution not only to the CMTO but to the community broadcasting sector as a whole.”
