Community radio station 2SER 107.3 wins at World’s Best Radio awards

Community radio station 2SER 107.3 has been recognised for producing some the world’s best work in radio broadcasting at this year's New York Festivals Radio Awards.

More than 30 countries including large national and international broadcasters like ABC, SBS, CBC, BBC and Swedish Radio vied for the global radio broadcasting honours.

2SER has been awarded both Gold and Silver awards in the category of Information and Documentary for programs Think: Health (Gold radio winner) and Think: Digital Futures (Silver radio winner).

2SER Station Manager Melanie Withnall said:

“We are over the moon to be awarded for making some of the world’s best work in radio broadcasting, the unique collaboration between 2SER Radio and UTS has allowed us to make great quality programs and we look forward to making more into the future.”

“We know there is a demand for this unique content that you won’t get anywhere else. UTS researchers are at the cutting edge of their fields and with the careful and considered crafting of this information by our producers at 2SER, we are able to produce weekly content that is both relatable and compelling.” 

Three of the four Think radio programs that are produced by 2SER were listed as finalists in this year’s awards: including Think: Digital Futures for science and technology, Think: Health for health and medical reporting and Think: Sustainability for journalism on the environment and ecology.

2SER is supported by UTS to produce four half hour programs each week that communicate the innovative research done by UTS academics in an entertaining radio format. The programs aim to show the impact of this research. They are made by a team of radio producers including: Ellen Leabeater (previous Think: Health and current Digital Futures reporter) Jake Morcom (Think: Sustainability reporter), Josh Nicholas (previous Think: Digital Futures reporter), Ninah Kopel (previous Think producer), Miles Martignoni (previous Think Supervising Producer), Emma Lancaster (Think Supervising Producer) and Melanie Withnall (2SER Station Manager).

A delegation from 2SER travelled to the US to attend the awards being held on Monday 20 June in Manhattan, New York.

Gold Radio winner recipient Ellen Leabeater says she is not surprised that the content made at 2SER is worthy of global recognition.

“We have a really rare opportunity at 2SER to work with experts who have spent decades honing their knowledge and by using radio as a connecting medium, we can put a human face to their research for greater impact”.
