From the Embers Podcast receives High Commendation at 2020 Quill Awards

The CBAA is thrilled to share that From the Embers—a podcast series recounting the experiences of communities affected by the 2019-20 bushfires—was named as highly commended in the Podcasting category at Melbourne Press Club’s 2020 Quill Awards, announced at the annual ceremony on Friday, 26 March.

“Community radio stations are unique and valuable places for storytelling—as they draw their producing and presenting personnel from the communities served. In From the Embers, our production team were able to partner with community radio stations and their communities, to amplify their stories in their own voice,” says CBAA CEO Jon Bisset.

A nine-part series, From the Embers tells the stories of survival and heroism in the face of great danger. Each episode is produced in partnership with a local community radio station and takes listeners to a different bushfire-affected area, revealing unique, hyperlocal accounts of individuals and communities from Mallacoota to Kangaroo Island to Braidwood.

From the Embers is an important reminder of the essential role that storytelling plays in providing a platform for those affected to be honoured, and to heal. Sharing stories also helps to build communal awareness and understanding throughout Australia.

Continuing to have a resounding impact on the Australian storytelling landscape, the powerful narratives featured in From the Embers have been influential in the creation of the upcoming ABC TV mini-series drama, FIRE, to be released later this year.
