Last Friday on 8 March, Castlemaine’s MainFM had a day full of live broadcasting at their radio picnic, celebrating the contribution and achievements of women near and far. Stories, live performances and of course music were shared, while cake was eaten. They also dove into the history of the day, with special interviews from women who were at the first International Women’s Day rally in Melbourne in 1975

Led by MainFM’s all-star cast of female presenters, it was a day by them for them, with a special segment by their young presenters in a Youth Takeover. Most excitingly, MainFM launched their new series: “Extraordinary/Ordinary: Commemorating and celebrating women in Central Victoria". It’s going to air this Friday and creator Lisa D’Onofrio has uncovered some fascinating stories of women from around the region.

“We are lucky to be living in a country that recognises the importance of striving for gender equality, but past injustices cannot be forgotten, and we need to push for ongoing progress, to ensure women’s rights are not eroded in the future,” said MainFM’s station manager Steph Riddel.

“Our wish for this broadcast was to celebrate the contribution and achievement of women in a joyous and uplifting way and we thought it was a lot of fun.”

Other stations that marked the day with special broadcasts included 2BBB, RTRFM, 3CR, 8CCC, PBS, 2SER and JOY. If you're from one of those stations or another that celebrated the day we'd love to hear from you, get in touch via our contact page.
