Statement from the CBAA regarding complaints about Russian program on 3ZZZ
The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), is the peak body and membership organisation for over 450 community radio stations across Australia.
All community radio stations are licensed to broadcast under the auspices of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The CBAA has no regulatory function. However the Community Radio Broadcasting Codes of Practice, registered with ACMA, requires all member radio stations to ensure fair and accurate reporting that does not cause distress or mislead listeners; and to represent viewpoints fairly without having a misleading emphasis, editing out of context or withholding relevant and available material.
The CBAA was deeply concerned following complaints of extreme and offensive sentiments expressed by a presenter on the Russian program of Melbourne-based 3ZZZ and is aware these complaints are now with ACMA. We fully support any investigation and subsequent action.
In the meantime, the presenter who made the offensive comments is no longer presenting the program.
The CBAA has conveyed its concerns clearly to 3ZZZ’s management, urged its investigation of the matter be undertaken as a matter of urgency, and advised management to work closely with their Russian committee to closely monitor program content and ensure strict adherence to the Community Radio Broadcasting Codes of Practice.
Enquiries can be directed to the CBAA's Head of Advocacy and Communications, Holly Friedlander Liddicoat, via [email protected] or via 02 9318 9623.
