Gotye turns up heat on Minister Conroy ahead of budget

International music sensation Gotye has called on the Federal Government to ensure a future for digital community radio services in Australia by committing adequate funding in next week’s Federal Budget.

Gotye is the latest in a string of big names to throw their support behind the Commit to Community Radio campaign, joining the likes of H.G Nelson, John Safran, Paul Kelly and Andrew Denton.

Will our MPs answer the big question?

This week while pollies in Canberra were busy counting the numbers, so were we.

The results are in - and there are tens of thousands of people across the country asking:

Will the Government commit to community radio?

Along with Minister Conroy, Minister Wong and Treasurer Swan, your local MP is in a position to help us save our community digital radio services.

Does your local MP support community radio? Ask them here.

Our local MPs represent our interests in Parliament. And it’s in our interest – and in the interest of communities right across Australia – to have access to digital community radio services.

Funding back on track for Australian Music Radio Airplay Project

The Federal Government has confirmed that the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (Amrap) will be included in the 2013 budget and beyond to support community radio stations to promote new Australian music on air and online.

Amrap Manager, Chris Johnson has heralded the government’s four-year funding commitment as a victory for thousands of Australian musicians and community broadcasters.

“We are relieved and delighted that the government has delivered ongoing support for Amrap to benefit Australian musicians, broadcasters, and the 4.4 million Australians who tune to community radio every week”, Johnson said.

“Thousands of musicians can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Amrap can continue to help community broadcasters get great Australian music to the airwaves, and promote artists through station websites and mobile devices”, said Johnson.

Day of Action for Community Digital Radio

On Wednesday 13 March 2013, the Commit to Community Radio campaign held a 'day of action'  to maintain all current community digital radio services in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Stations around the country actively promoted the campaign website to support a digital future for community radio at www.committocommunityradio.org.au

Current community digital radio services were launched in 2011 and unless we can maintain those services the future of access to digital broadcasting is at risk for all community broadcasters.

Commit to Community Radio

The future of free-to-air broadcasting is digital - but for community radio stations, that future is now at risk.

Unless the Federal Government addresses a $1.4m funding shortfall in the upcoming budget to support current community digital radio services in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth many vital community services will have to be switched off.

The Commit to Community Radio campaign calls on Minister Conroy to commit to a future for community radio in the budget.
