3MBS Schubert Marathon
On Sunday 30th March, 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne successfully staged and broadcast its second annual 14-hour Marathon with the 3MBS Schubert Marathon.
Between 9am and 11pm, 45 of Australia’s finest musicians showcased their artistry, dexterity and commitment to community radio by performing 40 of Schubert’s greatest chamber and Lieder masterworks in a 14-hour musical triumph.
Donating their time and talent, all the musicians expressed their delight in being involved with such a unique musical experience – one which had more than 2100 people attend over the course of the day.
Pianist Kathryn Selby, who wowed audiences in the fiendishly difficult ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy and later in the ‘Trout’ Quintet, described the Marathon as “Wonderful, with generous hosts, beautiful audiences, brilliant colleagues and the most sublime music!”
A delighted audience member – who managed to last the entire Marathon – said 'Sublime! If you had asked me to list my favourite Schubert works, the result would closely resemble today’s entire program!'
General Manager Anne Frankenberg said 'After last year’s sold-out Beethoven Marathon, we knew we had to follow up with something special – and it was. 3MBS is the voice of fine music in Melbourne, and we are humbled that such an extraordinary group of artists have come together to raise funds to support our round-the-clock broadcasting.'
