Australia Day Honours for Community Broadcasters

As always, community broadcasters featured strongly in the Governor General's Australia Day Honours List, in addition to various other local community awards announced as part of Australia Day celebrations.

4CRM in Mackay, Queensland's efforts were awarded the Mackay Community Group Award, and we'd love to hear from more stations whose efforts were recognised as part of local community award ceremonies. Please contact the CBAA to let us know.

Several individuals who have actively contributed to the community broadcasting sector past and present were awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Divison. They include:

  • Dr Ghayath Al-Shelh, for service to the community of the Bankstown region served as Vice-President Muslim Community Radio 2MFM, 1999-2003
  • Mr Jack Andrew Dickenson for service to the community of Eden, NSW was a presenter and member of 2SEA Eden Community Radio, 2000 -2004.
  • Mrs Edith Helen Edmonds for service to the community of Claremont WA through the arts, a volunteer at Capital Community Radio since 2007
  • Mr Barry Albert Hall, for service to the community of Nairne SA as an entertainer and radio announcer, icluding the Golden Years of Radio weekly music program on 5RPH
  • Ms Loretta Josephine Marron Arron of Burpengary Qld for service to community health, an on-air contributor on 4OUR since 2007
  • Ms Patricia Loris Richardson for service to women, and to the community of Nambucca Heads, a volunteer for 2SER-FM, 1986-1989
  • Mr Michael White, for service to the community of Wellington, NSW a foundation Member of Binjang Community Radio.


Finally, Mr Michael Gordon Hewitson was awarded the prestigious Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to education, to the Anglican Church in Australia, and to the community of Unley. Mr Hewitson was founding Chairman of 5PBA FM in addition to serving as an Adviser to the Minister for Funding Public Radio, 1980-1987

Included on the Queen's Birthday honour list, Mooney has been recognised for his contribution to broadcast media and to the community. Congratulations from all of us at the CBAA!
