Introduction to Members - their rights and obligations

Print

Depending on your station's incorporated status, your members will have different rights and obligations under both the law that regulates the type of organisation they are a member of (for example a Victorian incorporated association) as well as the organisation's rules themselves. The rules or constitution forms an agreement between an organisation and its members.

Membership is a formal legal status, and all members should have their membership recorded on the members register (or equivalent). For many structures, an organisation has a legal requirement to keep a members register up-to-date.

Guides to understanding members of not-for-profit organisations

These resources from Justice Connect's Not-for-Profit Law Information Hub explore the rights and obligations of members by each state's incorporated association laws. Most community radio station's are incorporated associations, and this guide also explains how to find out your organisation's incorporated status if you are unsure.
