The ear training guide for audio producers

NPR Training has put together this guide to help you identify problematic audio, prevent the most common problems and recognise when it’s time to call for help. It’s a great reference guide for anyone who works with audio, from new producers to seasoned veterans. Before you start, you can also learn how to identify bad audio and take their audio problems quiz.

The guide has three main sections:

Recording problems

These issues occur while recording in a studio or gathering audio in the field.

Editing problems

These issues pop up at your desk, when putting the piece together.

Mixing problems

These issues occur while putting the finishes touches on a piece.

Avoiding Pesky Recording Problems

How often are you recording an interview in the field and you think 'oh it's a bit noisy here, but it's ok, i'll edit it out later!' It can often be harder to edit something out, rather than changing your location or microphone position. In this short article and recording, Transom look at samples of bad recordings provided by NPR and discuss how to make them better.
