#1 Dads is the solo project of Melbourne based musician Tom Iansek whose enigmatic and sincere songwriting has been missed over the last six years while working on his forthcoming album, Golden Repair. Freedom Fighter is the first taste of the upcoming release and the perfect example of Iansek’s knack for melding introspective musings and indie-pop. This folkish piano ballad on the general strangeness of existence is rendered to stellar effect. Freedom Fighter debuted in second place on the Metro Chart this week just ahead of A.GIRL’s All Over You at number seven. Nineteen year old Hinenui-Terangi Tairua AKA A.GIRL continues to impress thanks to her vibrant vocals and meticulous production. All Over You opens delicately with subtle guitar slides and piano stabs before evolving into a huge chorus of rolling synth baselines and sharp, trap-like hi-hats.

Leading the Way on the Regional Chart

Melbourne’s Kingswood kick off 2020 with the announcement of their long awaited third studio album Juveniles with a new single, the intoxicating Bittersweet. It’s the perfect showcase of the band’s eclectic sound and willingness to diversify. Leaning into their love of crunchy guitar driven rock and layered harmonies, Bittersweet has momentum and rides the kind of energy usually put out there by acts like Queens of The Stone Age. Kingswood went straight to number one this week just ahead of the latest from Tame Impala, Lost In Yesterday in second place. Kevin Parker’s universally acclaimed project continues to move ahead with leaps and bounds yet this latest track seems to take a look back. Delving into the distorted nature of nostalgia, Lost In Yesterday is an examination of the fondness we hold for the past and the rose tinted way we recall times that actually may not have been so great.

Beyond the Charts

Returning from their first stateside trip in 2019, Ratking are preparing for their third EP alongside multiple international support slots (Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Jesus Piece to name a few). Despite their relatively short time together, Ratking have added their own fingerprint to the ever-expanding universe of hardcore - blending elements of punk rock, metal and thrash in a way both familiar and unique. They’re not in the charts this week, but with a bold and inventive take on The Offspring’s Come Out and Play, we’re likely to be seeing them in the top ten very soon.
