On the 20 July 2013, 3NRG celebrated 25 years of broadcasting to the Sunbury and surrounds.

In the early 1980's the Shire of Bulla surveyed the local youth and the result indicated a need for a local radio station. In July 1988 the first test broadcast went out and was an instant success, so much so that the Shire of Bulla Council sought out interest in setting up a community radio station in the area.

Amongst the original steering committee was Mr John Hanson who went on to become an integral part of what was then known as Bulla FM.

The first presenter was the local Council Youth Worker John Awad, broadcasting from a shed behind the Council Buildings using borrowed equipment.

In 1999 the station was granted a licence for allowing them to broadcast for the entirety of the weekend, as well as chaning their name to 3NRG FM.

In 2000 Derek Rigby was presented with the first Life Membership of 3NRG for his dedication to the station. The main broadcast studio for 3NRG is now known as the Derek Rigby Studio, in his honour.

On Saturday 20 July 2013, the radio station will hold a dinner to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

“We’re extremely proud of where we began and where we are today,” said Station Manager Mike Cherriman.

Further information on the 25th anniversary celebration is available from the 3NRG website.
