Welcome to the March 2019 content of our national suicide prevention and mental health awareness project, developed with the support of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

Each month, our project team develops a series of 20 short radio segments designed to promote help-seeking behaviour and positive lifestyle choices, using interviews with service providers, as well as profiles of people who have successfully dealt with tough times in their lives.

What's in this month's segments?

  • This month we profile the SANE Forums, which provide a genuine online peer-to-peer support service for carers and families, as well as people with lived experience of mental illness.
  • We hear about Laps for Life – a month-long swimming challenge that combines the mental health benefits of swimming with raising funds and awareness for young people living with mental health difficulties.
  • We catch up with R U OK? CEO Brendan Maher to find out how we can plan ahead for a conversation with someone we’re worried about, but who might not want to admit they’re not okay.
  • We find out about some activities you can plan that will help you to relax and cope with stress.
  • And we learn about the vital service Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia provides to expecting and new parents, including a specialist national mental health telephone counselling service.
