To celebrate their 20th anniversary, 98.9 North West FM held a Save Live Australian Music (SLAM) event outside its studio on Saturday February 23.

98.9 North West FM is based in Glenroy in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The station is dedicated to providing service, communication, information and entertainment to our members, supporters and to the people of our community.

When community radio station 98.9 North West FM conducted its first test tranmissions in 1987 its studio was filled with people who loved the concept so much they didn't want to go home.

More than twenty years on, North West FM's programs and announcers have grown and diversified, but they haven't lost the community spirit that first brought the station to life.

Treasurer and Morning Magazine co-host Jean Rau started at the station during its early days and was there for its first licenced transmission on April 8 1993.

"I had no idea about community radio but I got involved because they wanted a garden program," Ms Rau said.

"It has been so much fun. The whole station is 100 per cent volunteer driven but I consider it my career."

The station broadcasts a wide variety of award-winning shows including music, sport, ethnic language programs, specialist programs and community information.
