Today is World Radio Day - a day to celebrate radio as a medium and stations' role in promoting access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves.

This year's theme is Radio & Sports, and highlights radio's role in covering traditional sports, gender equality in sports broadcasting and coverage of sports for peace and development initiatives. World Radio Day image

Some of the great things community broadcasters in Australia are celebrating today include:
  • Vox FM in Wollongong NSW is hosting an Open Day from 10am to 2pm. Coffee, tea, munchies, tech talk and your favourite presenters - get more info and get along.
  • North West FM in Melbourne celebrates Glenn Scarborough, who has presented sports shows at the station for 23 years! A highlight of Glenn’s 2017 football season was presenting a dedicated program on the inaugural VAFA Women’s football competition.
  • SWR FM in Sydney's West has launched SWR Sport - their home for LIVE sports including A-League, W-League, NBL and ABL! Last year they broadcast all 80 games of the World Rugby Sydney Sevens - both men's & women's.
  • Gippsland FM's Darrell White was presented with an Order of Australia last week for his community service, including presenting the station's Churchill Football Club Show for 30 years.
  • SYN Radio has launched a new podcast, Credit to the Girls, which features interviews, analysis, previews and recaps from the AFL Women's!
  • Alpine Radio will be playing songs with the word “radio” in them or that have a theme of radio, and between 2pm and 4pm, guests will recall their favourite sports highlights heard on air, and the station will replay them. Listen.

If you're celebrating at your stations, get interviews, logos, images and other cool resources or register your event on the international map! And let us know!
