Noongar Radio wins gold at consumer protection awards

On the 15 March 2018, 100.9fm Noongar Radio was presented with the illustrious Ruby Hutchinson Award for raising consumer awareness through the media.

This prestigious award is granted to journalists or media organisations who inform their audience about their rights, value and safety when choosing to purchase goods and services. Ruby Hutchinson is the founder of CHOICE, formerly known as the Australasian Consumers Association. 

Winners of the prestigious Western Australian Consumer Protection Awards are extensively recognised in the wider community for this accomplishment. Noongar Radio continues to strive for consumer rights among the indigenous and non-indigenous population.

Consumer Protection and Financial Rights have dedicated weekly spots on Jeff Michael's DRIVE program. DRIVE is one of Noongar Radio's highest rating programs and can be heard from 3-6pm on weekdays.

Noongar Radio provides diverse programming suitable for listeners of all ages and is home to a family of producers, staff, broadcasters and volunteers alike. Programs include Breakfast With the 2 Norty Bros, Afternoons with Jeremy Garlett, Perth's only indigenous LGBTQI program Rainbow KINnection, Phil Walley Stacks' award winning Indigenous Beats, Strong Minds', Inside Out, Pappa J's iconic Motown Getdown, Smashcrew Sports and Yarning.

The Australian Consumer Protection awards have been recognized by the state government for 14 years through the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety and are celebrated to coincide with International Consumer Rights Day. They are held annually at the University of Western Australia. 

Former ABC Television newsreader Deborah Kennedy opened the proceedings with The Hon. Bill Johnston, Minister for Commerce and Industrial Relations and Acting Commissioner for Consumer Protection, David Hillyard in attendance. 

ABC The Checkout’s Kirsten Drysdale was a special guest at the awards. Station Manager Paul Whitton said:

“This is another great honour for the family of staff, volunteers and our community at Perth’s 100.9fm, Noongar Radio. A huge congratulation and thanks to all who make this possible”.

100.9FM Noongar Radio is Perth’s only Aboriginal radio station, Runner up as NAIDOC Perth Business of the Year 2016 and 2017, winner of two 2017 CBAA Awards and has been lauded on the floor of Western Australian parliament as “an awesome radio station”.
